OUR GIVING

Overview

PRIMARY INITIATIVES

Our Giving and Grants

Since 1987, the Claude Moore Charitable Foundation has steadfastly supported leading non-profit organizations, educational institutions, and healthcare innovators across Loudoun County and throughout Virginia. The Foundation’s investments are designed to expand access to education and workforce training, address critical human resource needs, and build long-term capacity and infrastructure within our communities.

The Foundation primarily fulfills its mission through two types of grants: Invitational Grants and Claude Moore Scholars Grants.

We support non-profit organizations serving Loudoun County residents. Invited organizations cover critical needs in the community and may apply for either an unrestricted general operating support grant or a program-specific grant, depending on their needs.

Invitations are typically sent yearly in the fall, with awards announced and funds disbursed in January of the following year.

Claude Moore Scholars grants create education and training pathways that align with Virginia’s workforce needs. The grants are administered by Claude Moore Opportunities, which manages the program’s operations and partnerships across the state. As with the Invitational Grant, participation in Claude Moore Scholars Program Grants is by invitation.

During one of my clinicals, I cared for a hospice patient. It was my first experience with end of life care, and I was nervous. But when my instructor placed my hand on the patient’s, I understood that nursing wasn’t just about tasks, it was about presence, compassion, and human connection. These moments have inspired me to continue my education and become a Certified Nurse Midwife. I want to provide care that empowers women and builds trust. What motivates me most is knowing that higher education will allow me to uplift others, especially those in underserved communities.

The Claude Moore Scholars Program helped me break free from a path that wasn’t mine and discover a career rooted in advocacy, compassion, and purpose. Now, I am more than just a student—I am a future nurse who is ready to serve, connect, and make a lasting impact.

Before Claude Moore, I was unsure what my future in healthcare might look like. I knew I wanted to help people, but I didn’t yet understand what that really meant or what path to take. The program changed that. Through the medical classes and clinical exposure, I earned certifications as a Medical Administrative Assistant, Certified Nursing Assistant, and CPR.

The Claude Moore Scholars Program didn’t just prepare me, it gave me the confidence to believe I belong in this field. It showed me how to turn my experiences into action and my challenges into motivation. As I continue my journey in the Chronobowl, I carry the lessons, values, and inspiration from Claude Moore with me. I’m not just running toward a career, I’m running toward the kind of future where I can make a real impact.

Participating in the Claude Moore Scholars Program has given me hands-on experience in the real life healthcare setting, allowing me to explore the medical field in a meaningful, eye opening way. This experience has enhanced my desire to pursue a career in medicine. Additionally, my motivation to pursue a higher education has come from the struggles my family and I faced.

I had to take on more responsibilities with my mother being the only source of income and my brother and father being ill… I spent a lot of time in hospitals and doctors offices, and eventually they turned into my comfort place. The help and comfort that the healthcare professionals had on my family during this difficult time was life saving. Being so young and facing so much at the time, these health care professionals made me feel safe.

The Claude Moore Scholars Program has supported our class by providing funding for our scrubs, supplies, and equipment. By making the course more accessible to someone who comes from a low-income family like me, I was able to experience all the course had to offer without worrying about the costs.

A free clinic operated through local volunteering healthcare professionals and donated funds to provide basic medical needs for the poor and homeless. A free examination can alert to more serious conditions and illnesses that can then be treated before they become worse and more costly. Similarly, I aspire to become someone who can support and be a part of the assistance that the staff and providers at the food kitchen and clinic are able to offer to the community and the people in need.

Recognizing that the current and anticipated demand for high quality workforce development programs far exceeds the philanthropic resources of Claude Moore Charitable Foundation, we created Claude Moore Opportunities, an independent, public 501(c)3, to build upon its legacy and to further the foundation’s mission to increase academic competence and encourage leadership especially for under-resourced populations throughout the Commonwealth.
